Police chief calls Sunderland city centre demonstration ‘wholly unacceptable and wrong’

A senior police officer has condemned a demonstration planned for Sunderland city centre this weekend as ‘wholly unacceptable.’

Six men were arrested after reports that a 26-year-old woman had been attacked at an address in Peel Street overnight between Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4, last year.

TWAFA Comment; It is clear that the young woman involved in the original incident does not want any demonstrations to take place in Sunderland. Yet those organising the divisive march still see fit to ignore her heartfelt wishes.

It is also instructive that feelings are being whipped up by misinformation whether on social media or sadly, even in more mainstream media outlets.  We must all beware stories which aim to stir up hatred and divisions.

Northumbria Police are surely correct to state that the protests “are being organised by people pushing their own agenda to divide our communities.”

Let us hope they pass peacefully with a minimum of disruption…. and impact.
