St. James'
Park Football Ground
With the help of local football fans we held regular
pickets of National Front papersellers at St. James' Park football ground.
NF paper-sellers have not returned since. TWAFA was the first group in
the country to challenge the NF national campaign to recruit football
supporters.
Gordon Stridiron
A local fascist working in the Post Office mail sorting office, was sacked
following exposure in the local press for interfering with mail. In 1994,
Stridiron was sacked from a job with Gateshead Council as a community
worker that he was using to promote Nazi views amongst young people. TWAFA
provided information that lead to his dismissal.
1990 - Anti-racist Anti-fascist
Community Carnival held in Newcastle upon Tyne.
1991
For more than 2
years the British National Party, under the leadership of John Tyndall,
stood candidates in local elections - Darlington, Sunderland and Silksworth,
South Shields. TWAFA spearheaded the exposure of the BNP and their real
agenda by organising leafleting in town centre shopping areas and on local
estates.
1992
Exposure of three
separate instances of British National Party's electoral malpractice.
1994 - Unity Carnival
Held in the West End of Newcastle upon Tyne the event attracted 10,000
people.
Publication of When
Hate Comes To Town
1995
The organising of
a successful programme of events to commemorate the liberation of the
concentration camps and death camps, including exhibitions, films and
a day-school.
1996
We witnessed the
virtual extinction of BNP activity in the Tyne and Wear area after a period
of intensive campaigning.
1998
Fifteenth Anniversary
of Tyne and Wear Anti-Fascist Association. Celebrated with events and
a party. Celebration of the birth of Paul Robeson with the screening of
"The Proud Valley" at the Tyneside Cinema. 60th anniversary
of Kristallnacht marked by a candle lit vigil in central Newcastle upon
Tyne.
1999
Intensive victim
support and the development of innovative anti-fascist anti-racist training
with statutory authorities.
